If you have never taken your doxie to Earthdog, here's your chance! What is Earthdog? An earthdog trial tests the working ability and instinct of the small, short legged terriers and dachshunds. These dogs were bred to hunt vermin and other quarry which lived in underground dens. Earthdog den trials involve man-made underground tunnels that the dogs must negotiate, while scenting a rat, the "quarry." The dog must follow the scent to the quarry and then "work" the quarry. Depending on the sanctioning organization, “working” means barking, scratching, staring, pawing, digging; any active behavior. The quarry is protected at all times by wooden bars across the end of the tunnel. The hunting encounter is controlled, and neither dog nor the quarry, usually two rats, are in any danger.
American Kennel Club (AKC) earthdog tests
AKC earthdog tests are intended as noncompetitive venues in which the handlers may gauge their dog’s natural hunting aptitude when presented with an underground hunting situation. According to the AKC General Regulations for Earthdog Tests, the noncompetitive program begins with a basic introduction to den work and quarry, progressing through gradual steps to the point where the dog can demonstrate that it is willing to perform the required tasks, including seeking its quarry and working it underground. Dogs that are registered with the AKC and are six months of age or older may participate in AKC earthdog tests. They do not need to be intact, and purebred dogs that have been assigned “Indefinite Listing Privilege” (ILP) numbers, may also participate.
September 12/13 is TIP-H's second AKC earthdog weekend. Again Kini Hawaiian Earthdogs will offer an AWTA test on Sunday afternoon only. Judging panel is pending AKC approval. Volunteers are needed to help gate steward and to prepare the test site. Volunteering is a great way to learn about what it takes to put on an earthdog test, the rationale behind how the tunnels are constructed, and gate stewarding allows you to be up close to where the action is at a test. At a test, only the judge, handler and dog are allowed at the test site. No outside spectators are allowed. Gate stewards work the day of the test. Volunteers for the "dig" work on either the Thursday and or Friday before the test. We dig in the late afternoon. There is a trencher to do the really hard stuff but we still need some strong hands to help lay the tunnels and groom the test site. ALL volunteers are eligible to receive discounts on test entries and upcoming seminars!!! Contact Lynn at BJsReverie@aol.com or 672-9876 for details ASAP! http://www.terriersinparadise.org/ Congratulations to Koa on passing Junior and Oka on passing IQ!
