2010 2nd Annual Hawaii Wiener Derby

Hawaiian Humane Society Canine Game Day

May 29_2010

Rules and Regulations

  • Must be a Wiener Dog. – This does not mean they have to be AKC registered.  If it looks like a wiener it will be considered a wiener. Some SMALL mixed-breed dachshunds are accepted - "tall doxies" (doxies with long legs) will have a separate race as well as puppies. Sorry, doxies are midgets and long legs give an advantage. Here is a description of the appearance of doxie legs if you are not sure:

"General Appearance - Low to ground, long in body and short of leg. Upper Arm - Ideally the same length as the shoulder blade and at right angles to the latter, lying close to the ribs, with elbows close to the body, yet capable of free movement. Forearm – Short; slightly curved inwards. The joints between the forearms and the feet (wrists) are closer together than the shoulder joints, so that the front does not appear absolutely straight. The inclined shoulder blades, upper arms and curved forearms form parentheses that enclose the ribcage, creating the correct “wraparound front.” The pelvis, the thigh, the second thigh, and the rear pastern are ideally the same length and give the appearance of a series of right angles. Rear pasterns - Short and perpendicular to the second thigh bone."

  • Please be sure your dog has had all required shots for its own protection.
  • Please, no bitches in heat on the premises. Let them stay home for their own safety.
  • No food (human or dog) is allowed in immediate race  area. Owners can have their favorite toy to help motivate their dog.
  • All dogs must be on a leash and will be asked to leave if unruly. Please keep your pet on a leash in the outdoor area at all times until it is your turn to race.
  • Owners are required to cleanup their dog’s accidents. Plastic bags available.
  • Dogs should be on their best behavior (i.e. no fighting or biting).
  • Only two handlers in the race area per dog - one at start and one at finish line. If you need someone to help you, let us know and we will ask the crowd or get one of our staff members to assist you.
  • Races will be run in heats with the winners of each heat racing against the other heat winners.
  • No dogs not involved in the race are permitted within the race area.
  • No selling of puppies or adult dogs of any size or breed.
  • Any donations will go to paying for event supplies for Hawaii Wiener Derby and then to a dog-friendly organization to be chosen.
  • All dogs must be registered, prior to racing, and owners sign “Release of Liability/Photo Release.” Owners who have not signed the release will not be able to race their dogs.
  • All dogs must be at least 4 months of age or older and have had their current boosters!
  • Absolutely NO throwing or dropping your dog on to the track.
  • DO NOT LEAVE ANY ANIMALS IN YOUR CAR!! Event staff will have the right to involve the proper authorities if we feel an animal is at risk; you might want to bring your pet's travel kennel and water.

OUR MOST IMPORTANT RULE

DON'T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY!!

Have Fun! This is an event to allow Wiener Dog fans to get together and laugh at our silly little (and sometimes not so little) guys! Please take a lighthearted approach at these events; we all want to have fun whether we are a Wiener, Winner, or both!!
